It makes sense for a website on open source designs to promote open source as a whole.

Nowadays, there are so many options for good quality software, that objectively there is no need for anyone to rely on proprietary software for any of the "normal" uses.

It would be nice to have a session promoting open source software, where people could share their own experiences with the many excelent open source products we all have available.

This is my sugestion, and i believe virtually every forum user is already using some open source software.

Personaly, i stopped using MS Office for 10 years, and it still amazes me to find people saying that they can't live without it.

There is a free resource section on this site already.

@Fernbap: As Virtual pointed out, take a look at our Free Resources section. It pretty much covers what you're asking about.

As for discussing in an open forum about various open source software programs, we can do that here in the Get Free Web Designs forum :)

I tried not using MS Office and tried using OpenOffice but OO caused more problems then it fixed. Especially in Word 2007, I haven't found anything that compares to it in features and ease of use.

Can you explain with more detail on how a "session" would work?  I'm completely open to this sort of discussion, but I'm not understanding what you mean by a session in the forum.

Well, most forums scripts have sections who contain forums who contain topics.

I don't know how it is called in wordpressland, though Wink

Example: a Open source software session, containing forums about, for instance, html editors, graphics programs, ftp clients, you know, everything the average web professional uses in his daily work.

Eventually, some free services, etc.

This would turn this place a reference for newbies for information on what tools he can use.

[edit] oh, i see i made a typo in the title, which probably contributed to yout confusion, sorry for that…

I have never heard them called 'Sessions'. They are called 'forum categories' by every forum I know.

@Fernbap: We already have this. We have a general forum with sub categories (sessions) and another one called web design, also with sub categories.

Are you suggesting we have a main forum for open source, then sub categories in it like we do for the current forums?

Yes. One thing that is important for anyone who browses this site for templates is learning the tools people use to make and edit them.

A website template is not a final product, and a great percentage of web template downloaders are people who are learning how to make websites, how to edit designs, how to convert a template into a CMS theme, many don't even have a clue about CSS.

After whitnessing the decline and fall of several template related websites, i came to the conclusion that they don't offer enough interest for the casual visitor to keep them around often. After all, that is how most communities are built and mantained. By giving the visitor a reason to come back often.

We don't want (i think) this site to be just a repository of templates for download.

I always keep in mind that such a website is in the most part for the amateur web designer, that wants to learn from the templates and wants to learn how to make them.

A forum is the place for sharing experiences, that can be a source of insight for the visitor.

Anyway, these are my 2 cents, and the reason i sugest this website to become something more than just a template repository. This (and any site) is as valuable as the community that supports it.
