Hi-
I just tried updating to the newest version of word press, but got the following error message:
"The update cannot be installed because WordPress 2.9.1 requires MySQL version 4.1.2 or higher. You are running version 4.0.27."
I emailed Go Daddy, my host, about this, and got this response.
"Unfortunately the only way to upgrade the MySql is to create a new MySql and choose an updated version. "
My question, how does this get handled. If I choose a new MySql, will I lose all my old material?…..would my blog have to start again from scratch?
I am not too great with my knowledge of word press, or MySql.
Anyone have a advice for me?
Thanks.

Make a backup of your current WordPress databases for each site. I believe GoDaddy hosting has access to phpMyAdmin to do this. Be sure to export out everything for each database and name the file something you can associate with each site.
Then do what they suggested by creating a new MySQL database for each site, then import the backups into the new databases.
Also, before doing all this, give GoDaddy a call on their toll free number and ask to speak with a senior tech. They should be able to upgrade your MySQL without having you to do my suggestions.

Thanks Sean. I like the idea of calling them up to go through it step by step

Sean, since it all worked out, can I delete the old MySQL?
Right now, I am backing up the new database.

If you've made the changes to your wp-config.php files on all sites and put in the new database information, do one final test to make sure all is working, then yes, you can delete the old MySQL stuff.

Yep, all works. It is actually just one site that needed to be updated. But all works fine.
