Sub domains-how do they work?

I am looking at building a web store for the 2 record labels that I am running-although both labels have their own names and hosted separately I think I want to have it so that the content of the stores will in effect be identical.  What I want to do is keep the look of the store individual to the respective labels.

I was wondering how does a sub domain work.  Can I use a sub domain as 'store.websitename.com' and then use the content within that site for both pages?

I think the thing I am puzzled about as this is all new to me is how would I be able to incorporate a sub domain into the main site?  Is there a way to do that or effectively would a store button in the navigation menu take it to a the separate page of the sub domain?

If someone could shed some light on how they work and how best to utilise them that would be appreciated.

From the duplicate content point of view it wouldn't be wise to have the same content on multiple pages even if one copy is on a sub dom.

The exact process of creating a subdom would vary from host to host. You'd essentially be creating a normal folder in your public_html and calling pages from there for display in store.website.com.

A good place for more details would be my other forums, people there are well versed with sub-domains.
