For as long as I can remember, we've always been against text within images on any designs submitted to Get Free Web Designs or any of the other open source web design sites.
The reason for this is some people don't have the ability to edit images to change text in logos or other text based graphics.
Another reason is sometimes designers don't always provide the PSD or other source files (fonts, etc.)
Our design rules and guidlines are pretty basic, but I'm wondering if we should maybe adjust them for things like text within images.
Reason being is more and more people are getting familiar with programs like PhotoShop and GIMP.
So community, what do you think? Take a moment to look over our current design rules and guidelines and provide some feedback on what you think should stay, be adjusted, removed or added.

I don't use GIMP… does anyone know if it can use .psd files? If so, I'd say we could allow text in images as long as .psd files are included. If not, then I'd say that Photoshop is still pretty spendy for most people.

@Aaron: Yes, GIMP can open PSD files. It's pretty much a lite open source version of Photoshop.
It doesn't do everything like Photoshop, but for what it is and being a free download, it's pretty good and a decent Photoshop replacement for those who can't afford to buy it.
Having designers include the PSD file (and also required fonts) would be a nice idea, but we must also keep in mind that will increase the file size for download.
In general I think our design rules and guidelines does need an overhaul, so getting some feedback from the community would be really good.

I would say text in images is bad practice in general… it doesn't get picked up by search engines, and most instances of text-in-images can be replicated using CSS and a little creativity.

I agree, however for SEO purposes, you can have a text equivalent in the HTML and having the CSS call the image to make it look a little nicer on the front end. I hope that makes sense.

Text replacement is a vital technique.
It makes sites look a ton better while still looking fine in web crawlers and text only/mobile devices.
That said, mobile devices have come a long way, and the only people paying for data are using a reasonable phone (blackberry, iphone, android).

Internet is required to get here to download the designs and users can use free services such as Pixlr to edit any images online.

I would not have a problem with text in images.

No text in images was an appealing challenge for me and Learned a great deal from it but on the other hand, I would very much like to see what all the talented designers here would do with that door open. I vote lets allow it.

For the people who say allow it, that's fine, but what about some terms to go along with it? Things like is a source PSD file included or not included with the download or can it be downloaded from the designers site, etc.
Let's try and flush this out a little more.
It's nice having a forum for this sort of thing by the way
