Which laptop should I buy?

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a new laptop this month and can't decide which configuration to go for.

The ones I'm considering are:

MacBook Pro 13 with 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo and Sony VAIO F13 with 2.66 MHz Core i5 processors.

For what other features are concerned, both have 3 MB L2 cache, 4 GB RAM. The MacBook has a 256 MB video card while the VAIO has a 1 GB one.

I'll be using it mostly for web development and the most applications I'll have open are local web server + Photoshop + Dreamweaver +  4-5 browsers + 2-3 other programs (FTP, file browser, Skype).

I'll need it to perform well with all these tasks open but I'm also concerned about its design since the way it looks (especially the OS) influences what I create.

I'm also interested that the laptop resists time and change. The one I have now is 3 years old and is a piece of rubbish. I know the Core 2 processors are aging out, but also new Windows software eats up more and more resources.

My budget for this is maximum 1200 USD and these are the most expensive laptops I can aford.

With this in mind, which would be a better option?

I would recommend Macbook Pro. Not because of fanboyism or anything.. I think its design and the OS has a great influence on creative people and how they work. You won't find that kind of integration between OS and hardware on any other PC.

Have to warn you though, If you are looking for more power, Macs are not what you want. And they are very very over-priced.   If you want ease of use, less to worry and a great interafce that can inspire you as well as make your job easier, get a MacBook Pro.

I use a Macbook (2008 model – unibody aluminum ) and it works great and I do all my design and coding jobs with it. It is still running smoothly and works great.

I agree. This is the main reason I'd go for the mac. And it has Helvetica instead of cheaptard Arial Bakie

What OS version are you using on it?

In this case great news Bakie

According to macrumors Apple may be updating the MacBook Pro line this fall or early Q1 2011. It think I'l wait another month or 2, maybe we'll see the i3 on the 13″ version Laugh

aah! that's exciting. would they be dropping the optical drives too ?  a lot of tech websites have been predicting that.  Also hope they reduce the price a bit more like they did to Air. Bakie

The 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro received a new build-to-order option for a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor on October 20th, 2010. The new option does not constitute a full update to the MacBook Pro line, but does suggest that a more substantial update to the full MacBook Pro lineup is not imminent.

may be not.

If you want something that really performs, a desktop is so much cheaper.

If you want a powerful laptop on a budget, sony and apple are out of the question, as neither offers very good machines for the money you pay. If you want something durable, go for asus, lenovo, toshiba, dell, HP, or even acer, (list has most reliable manufacturers in front) but look at business class machines. They are often ruggedised, rubberised, and fortified.
