Hi everyone,

I've taken on a partner for GFWD's. I'd like you to join me in welcoming Clinton to our community. Clinton will be acting as an admin on the forums and site and doing other everyday tasks such as approving designs.

Some of you will recall my earlier post about raising money for GFWD. Clinton is going to be taking full responsibility for raising money to cover all site costs (including his own cash investment in this site) and generating a surplus that we could possibly use towards advertising and raising our site profile and exposure.

I know many of you care about this site just as much as I do and may be concerned at potential changes lowering the quality of the site and community, however I have every confidence that you don't need to worry about this as Clinton and I have discussed in some depth the nature of the changes for the site and I believe he'll execute them well. In fact, many of you may not notice the changes at all. So far the only plans for the site are to:

1. Remove the site-wide advertisers in the right sidebar "Featured Sites". This will take a few months to achieve as existing commitments to advertisers need to be honored.

2. Replace these site-wide ads with other ads but ads will now be sold on a page by page basis – the number of advertisers to each page should be less than what we have now but with each one paying more and their ads may be placed in other locations on the page – like the left side-bar.

3. Move the Designer Blogroll. Clinton is keen that designers get more recognition and I completely agree with this. To that end, he intends making some modifications to the Designer Blogroll in the sidebar and /or finding a way of providing a bit more information about each designer. This will only help promote the designs and designers even more now. One change is that this blogroll will eventually move up to the top of the side bar where the advertisers' "Featured Sites" now resides. This should give designers more space "above the fold".

4. Remove or replace Google Adsense ads.

While I'm still around to do stuff and help Clinton out with the site, I'll be taking a back seat to allow Clinton to get on with managing the site. I hope you'll extend him your full support.

If you have any questions, etc or would like to talk with me directly, contact me via my profile page.

Hello Clinton and welcome to GFWD. I'll do whatever I can to help out the site so feel free to contact me. I posted a message here on my idea of raising money for GFWD. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone.

First, let me congratulate all of you on the fantastic work you've done here and all the designs that are …well, way beyond what I could ever do. Please feel free to drop me a line any time with any concerns or questions either via PM or email (webmaster @). Special congrats go to Sean for his building of this site. He's done a fantastic job.

My apologies for not contacting you individually to introduce myself. I'll be brief: I'm no designer but I know a bit about websites, I own a few hundred of them. You can often find me on my non-profit forums here where I discuss issues related to investing in websites and generating revenue from sites.

As Sean says, I'm not looking to make drastic changes, but I am looking to a) improve this site if I can and b) generate money. In that order.

First, I've moved the site to a dedicated server. That means none of the bandwidth concerns the site has had in the past. Nobody should ever have problems accessing the site or downloading your designs. We could even do away with the WP cache that this site uses to conserve bandwidth. While I commend Sean for its implementation and it was necessary on shared hosting, I feel it's a restriction on users and not to their convenience. I'll be getting around to disabling it. The site has been moved and bandwidth is now plentiful (as is disk space).

Second, I've setup a cron job for the site to be backed up automatically every night. Security is always important and while this site is very secure, you can never be too careful.

And… that's it so far :)

TOMW, that's an interesting idea, I'll reply in the other thread.

Welcome, Clinton!

Always nice to see more people involved with this project and giving it the stability we all want.

Thanks, Fernando.

Reading my previous post it appears there is scope for misinterpretation. Let me clarify – no criticism of Sean was intended. He's done – and continues to do – a brilliant job with this site. In fact, it'll be him I rely on when the time comes to move the site over to WP 3.0.

In the meanwhile, anyone with any suggestions for improvement, please contact me. I reply personally to every PM.
